War of Sea Beggars — a Redemis film

Redemis presents

Holland, 1571 — A true story

They took his boat
and broke his son's hand.

This was the payment.

So he sailed with men who had nothing left to lose.

War of Sea Beggars. Three men on a burning deck at night: a Sea Beggar commander, a weathered fisherman with a sword and axe crossed at his chest, and a young man with a pistol and his arm in a sling.

The film

With nothing left to fish, Dirk van Hoorn drifts into exile with the Sea Beggars — a ragged fleet of pirates and stateless men raiding Spanish shipping out of foreign ports. When every harbour in Europe closes to them, they turn hungry along their own coastline and take an undefended town on a whim. The Dutch Republic begins on a dock nobody meant to liberate.

1 April 1572

The Sea Beggars took the port of Brielle at dawn. The Dutch Republic dates itself from that morning. This film is the story of one man who was on the water that day.

The studio

Redemis. Stories That Matter.

More gets made every year, and less of it is worth remembering.

Redemis makes the other kind. Historical drama, built on real events, about people who had no say in them.
